The Accidental Missionary

Rev Sau-Lai "Daisy" Ho was appointed as the associate pastor at Culver-Palms United Methodist Church and was scheduled to start her work as a minister in the summer of 2003 after she was s a commissioned in June and received her visa. What a surprise to find that she had to return to Hong Kong within a few weeks!

Pastor Daisy had no pastoral assignment to go to in Hong Kong but after meeting with Rev. John Illsley, the senior pastor at the Methodist Church English Speaking (MCES-Hong Kong) she was welcomed as a volunteer in ministry. Her part time volunteer work has blossomed into a full time ministry in that multi-cultural congregation. Rev. Ho took on the responsibility of the MCES Women's Shelter which was started as a shelter for Filipino domestic workers who have lost their jobs and therefore have no place to live in Hong Kong or who have suffered abuse and seek shelter from that abuse. That ministry is now expanding to include refugee women of all nationalities.

As the matron for the women's shelter she has a place to call home but still no income since neither the Cal-Pac Conference nor the MCES in Hong Kong expected to have Daisy there in ministry, Rev Ho needs financial support. She has exhausted her own resources and while the stipend made available to her from MCES pays for her travel costs around Hong Kong, she needs an income.

If you are a member or participant in a United Methodist Church, please make your contribution to your church designating it for "Rev. Daisy Ho - Hong Kong". Rev Ho was designated as a conference "advanced special" so your contribution will be counted toward your congregation's support of missions. Your church will send your contribution to Dan Gara, Treasurer of the Cal-Pac Conference.
